Donation tax benefits
itemized deduction with donation
AGI Contribution Limits;
Contribution evidence
Donation more than $250 ต้องมีหลักฐาน
Form8283 Noncash Charitable Contribution
Donation outside the US
Greetings to all readers who possess a spirit of generosity and share with those around them—whether through financial contributions, material goods, labor, or moral support. The government encourages such philanthropy by offering tax deductions for both individuals and legal entities.
In the United States, donations must be made to charitable organizations or entities registered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)—such as places of worship, private charitable foundations, or various independent non-profit organizations. Each year, these organizations provide donors with a statement summarizing their contributions.
How can one be certain that the money or items donated actually reach the intended recipients? Every organization maintains records detailing the total donations received and the expenses incurred. Large charitable organizations have administrative costs—such as staff salaries, rent, and operational supplies—meaning that not every dollar donated goes directly to the beneficiaries. For instance, if you donate $100 to an organization supporting orphans, the full $100 will not reach the children directly.
If you want your money to reach orphaned children directly, you would need to go through a third party—for instance, by sponsoring an underprivileged child in Thailand and providing financial support personally. This ensures the funds go straight to the child, but please note that you will not be eligible for any tax deductions.
Tax Benefits for Charitable Donations
Previously, to claim a tax deduction for charitable donations, taxpayers were required to "itemize" their deductions rather than taking the "standard deduction." Under new legislation taking effect in 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize—and instead opt for the standard deduction—will still be permitted to claim a deduction for charitable donations of up to $1,000 per person ($2,000 for married couples filing jointly). The conditions are that the donation must be in the form of cash (not goods or property) and must be made to a "qualified organization" approved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Itemized Deductions and Charitable Donations
Taxpayers with significant expenses—such as high mortgage interest or property taxes—often choose to itemize their deductions because the total exceeds the standard deduction amount. In such cases, charitable donations can also be claimed as a deduction, subject to a threshold (the portion exceeding 0.5% of one's Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI). For example, if a single filer has an AGI of $100,000, the threshold would be $500 (0.5% of $100,000). If they make a $1,000 donation, they would be entitled to a deduction of $500 under these rules.
AGI-Based Contribution Limits
Cash donations: These are deductible up to a maximum of 60% of one's AGI. For instance, if an individual has an AGI of $100,000, their total deductible cash donations cannot exceed $60,000.
Long-term appreciated assets: Donations of such assets are subject to a limit of 30% of one's AGI. For example, with an AGI of $100,000, the limit would be $30,000 (30% of $100,000).
Documentation of Contributions Taxpayers must retain evidence of their donations,
Taxpayers must retain documentation of their donations, such as bank statements, correspondence with the recipient organization, and records of the donation amount. In short, an official receipt is not strictly required as long as there is sufficient evidence—for instance, in the case of monetary donations, a bank statement would suffice. However, for donations of goods or property, it is advisable to obtain a receipt.
For donations exceeding $250, documentation is required.
Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contribution) must be completed and attached to your tax return when donating items other than cash.
For non-cash donations valued at more than $500 but not exceeding $5,000, you must complete the relevant form and include it with your tax filing.
For non-cash charitable contributions exceeding $5,000, you must obtain documentation from a "qualified appraiser" or have the recipient organization sign Form 8283. For example, if a restaurant owner donates high-value items—such as furniture or equipment—to Goodwill, and the value exceeds $5,000, the donation must be documented with a signature from Goodwill and submitted along with your tax return. You can verify online whether a charitable organization is recognized by the IRS by using the "Tax Exempt Organization Search" tool.

Donations Outside the United States
Some organizations are registered in the United States—for example, World Vision, which provides support to children globally and receives contributions from donors worldwide, including those in the U.S. Such organizations typically issue an annual summary receipt for your donations. There are also other verifiable organizations to which you can donate, including schools and medical facilities in Thailand. However, most Thai organizations are not registered with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS); therefore, donations made to them cannot be claimed as tax deductions.
For instance, in my own case, donations I have made to schools or other organizations in Thailand are not tax-deductible.

Should I start receiving retirement benefits from the U.S. Social Security Administration at age 62?
It’s been such a long time since I last wrote an article—usually, I manage at least one per month! I’ve been swamped with various personal and professional commitments, not to mention getting hooked on watching short dramatic films. 😊 But now that I’ve officially hit the big 5-0, I started wondering: how much will I actually receive from the U.S. Social Security Administration when I retire? It’s similar to the social security system in Thailand, though the payout amounts are significantly higher.
