Should I start receiving retirement benefits from the U.S. Social Security Administration at age 62?
It’s been such a long time since I last wrote an article—usually, I manage at least one per month! I’ve been swamped with various personal and professional commitments, not to mention getting hooked on watching short dramatic films. 😊 But now that I’ve officially hit the big 5-0, I started wondering: how much will I actually receive from the U.S. Social Security Administration when I retire? It’s similar to the social security system in Thailand, though the payout amounts are significantly higher.

Are you qualified to receive benefit?
ถ้าทำงานต่ำกว่านี้ก็ไม่ได้ค่ะ สำหรับรายได้ที่ต้องได้รับแต่ละปีจะมีการเพิ่มขึ้นตลอด สามารถเชคได้จากเวบไซด social security benefit If I work in the US for 5 years, can I still get benefit ถ้าฉันทำงานในอเมริกาแค่ 5 ปี แล้วฉันยังจะได้รับสวัสดิการไม๊
How much can I get when I retire?

It’s been a very long time since I last wrote an article—usually, I manage at least one per month! Between various personal and professional commitments, and getting hooked on short dramatic films, I’ve been quite busy. 😊 However, now that I’ve officially hit the big 5-0, I started wondering: how much will I receive from the U.S. Social Security Administration when I retire? It’s similar to the social security system in Thailand, though the payout amounts are significantly higher.
If you haven’t registered to receive updates from the Social Security Administration yet, you really should. By setting up an account—linked via "ID.me"—you can access all your information, including projected retirement benefit amounts based on when you choose to retire. There’s even a built-in calculator! It’s especially convenient if you plan to live outside the U.S., as the agency encourages beneficiaries to handle their documentation online.
Are you qualified to receive benefits?
To be eligible for these benefits, you must have worked for at least 10 years, earning 4 credits each year. As of 2026, you earn 1 credit for every $1,890 in earnings; therefore, you need a total annual income of $7,560 to secure all 4 credits for the year. If you earn less than that, you won’t qualify. The required annual earnings threshold increases over time, so be sure to check the official Social Security Administration website. If you’re wondering, "Can I still receive benefits if I only worked in the U.S. for 5 years?"
The answer is no—you must have worked for ten years. If you return to work later for another 5 years, you can accumulate more credits. For example, consider someone who holds a legal U.S. work visa, works for 4 years, returns to Thailand for 5 years, and then comes back to the U.S. on another work visa for 6 years—the 4 years of previously earned credits would be combined with the subsequent 6 years, totaling 10 years. Your credits do not disappear.
How much can I get when I retire?
The amount you receive depends on your length of employment and the income you reported to the Social Security Administration. Naturally, there is a difference between someone who earns $10,000 a year and someone who earns $100,000 a year; some individuals might receive $240, while others could receive $3,500.
The age at which you choose to start receiving benefits also plays a role. You can begin collecting retirement benefits as early as age 62; however, waiting longer—or delaying receipt until after age 70—will result in a higher monthly payment. For instance, in my own case, if I were to start receiving benefits at age 62, I would get $2,341 per month. If I waited until age 67, the amount would be $3,565, and if I waited until age 70, it would increase to $4,554.
The Social Security Administration performs projections in advance. For example, if you earn $100,000 in 2025, the administration will calculate your future benefits based on the assumption that your earnings will remain at that level until retirement. Consequently, the estimated benefit amount can change over time, depending on your future earnings and your decision regarding when to stop working. ...or continue working until the age of 62.
As for me, I intend to keep working for as long as I am physically and mentally able. One advantage is that if you continue to work past the age of 70, your social security benefits will not be reduced or cut off. The question is: if I choose to keep working after age 62 and continue making contributions, what happens to the benefits I am entitled to receive?
If you continue working after age 62, your benefits will be reduced—specifically, $1 is deducted from your benefits for every $2 you earn above the annual limit set by the Social Security Administration. For 2026, this annual limit is $24,480. If I earn $100,000 a year, and my annual benefit amount is $28,092 ($2,341 x 12), I would receive no benefits at all. In that case, why bother claiming them while still earning a high salary? I have an older colleague, for instance, who worked until age 70—well past the "full retirement age."
Ultimately, how long one can continue to work depends on individual health and cognitive factors.
For those approaching retirement, it is worth considering whether the benefits you would receive at age 62 are sufficient to cover your living expenses. In my own case, a monthly benefit of $2,341 would be enough to live quite comfortably if I were to retire in Thailand. However, I don’t plan on retiring completely—that is, stopping work altogether. As an accountant and tax professional, I know peers in the same field who have continued working until the age of 87. They aren't working full-time, of course; they work a little bit while being "semi-retired"—essentially working by choice rather than out of necessity. Working keeps your brain active and your body in motion, helping you live a longer life so you can continue to witness the ever-changing beauty of this world.
The government benefits that working individuals contribute toward—and eventually receive upon reaching a certain age—function much like a revolving fund in a business or a household budget: those currently working make contributions, which are then used to pay those who have already retired. Could these funds run out? It is possible, but the government is unlikely to let that happen, given that for more than 14% to 50% of retirees in the United States, Social Security is their sole source of income—they have no 401(k) savings, IRAs, or other pension plans. Therefore, while Social Security should be part of your retirement strategy, it should not be your only source of income.

Medicare at 65: Government-Provided Health Insurance
Medicare is a health insurance program administered through the Social Security system. Anyone living in the United States knows that medical costs are extremely high; however, the government provides health insurance as a benefit for those aged 65 and older. You can also purchase additional coverage—such as "Part D" (prescription drug coverage)—at a significantly lower cost than what is offered by private insurance providers. This is a key advantage for those who have worked in the U.S. and contributed to the Social Security system.
A drawback, however, is that Social Security-linked health coverage does not pay for medical expenses incurred outside of the United States—unless you happen to have VA (Veterans Affairs) health care benefits, which are managed by a separate agency.
